What is Rattan?
Rattan belongs to the palm family (Arecales or Palmea). Around 600 species of rattan are known up to this day. Rattan is considered a friendly plant for the forest as it grows much faster than other tropical plants. They are also easy to harvest and do not harm other plants. Rattan grows best under some sort of tree cover, including secondary forest. Therefore, rattan indirectly protects tree cover and forest.
